I explained what happened and what was feeling good and what was feeling bad, lots of manipulation and poking about on my ‘lump’ followed. Now all the swelling has gone you can actually get to the root of the issue. His opinion; a 2-3” tear in my vastus medialis that’s the inner (closer to the other leg) muscle that is part of the quadriceps.
So what's next, well, some gentle stretching to start to free it up, I can ride on the trainer, not on the road, with a consistent cadence; no hills, no sprints and then see where we are in two weeks. It could take another 6 weeks to heal completely, that takes me through to end of November so pretty much my season is over.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed, clearly this is not that way that I wanted to end this year, but looking on the brightside this actually allows me to de-program my body of those slow slow miles. It does means that I can start with a cleanish slate in December/January and I’ll be able to re-program myself with the fast fast miles that I’ll need for next year.
Well at least I am not stuck doing just pushups!
Everything happens for a reason. Maybe the downtime is just what you need to plan a kick ass 2010. Sending healing vibes your way :)

ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sorry to hear. I'm sure lots of people told you to be patient already so I won't chime in but I know how it feels to be sidelined for a long time. Your time will come again and you'll come back stronger.
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of truth in having a doctor who understands athletes. I had one but we moved 1700km almost five years ago and I'm still trying to find one who understands when I say: My rest heartrate is 67 bpm and really high" without giving me that blank look.
Bummer! Take it easy and recover slowly. I did something similar during the Disney marathon last year to my hamstring and still have twinges of knee pain. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteWow. Sorry to hear the prognosis. Did he say anything about pool running? I've never tried but I hear its the next best thing. I'm hoping for a speedy recovery my friend.

Bummer that you can't run for a bit, but you'll come back stronger than ever, I have a feeling :) Enjoy some time off and time with the fam though! :) I'm sure Mrs. Q is happy to have you home and safe and sound, and in one piece!
ReplyDeleteWell at least it happened at the end of the year and not the beginning. Sucks to be injured definitely but if there is ever a good time, now is probably it with the year winding down, fall holidays in the horizon, football on the tv and your body needing some rest anyway. Here's to your recovery. Like Kathy said, easy and slow.
ReplyDeleteWell, poop! Six weeks will be over before you know it. At least you have an end in sight (unlike me). You'll only be stronger when it's all healed.

ReplyDeleteGood way to look at it. It's never fun being injured, but it really is an opportunity to keep your fitness on the trainer, then start anew with fresh legs and kick some butt!!
