OMFG! Every journey starts with a single step...but Intervals, really!?!

Well today I started the FIRST 10k plan; it was somewhat of a rude awakening. Tonight I had 8 x 400m intervals, easy to say, easy to type…just plain painful! Still the scenery made up for things! Without access to a track I use the beach path.

Obviously conscious of my leg I tried to walk the line between not overdoing it straight away and enough effort to make it worth the while. It’s given me a good baseline on my splits which are repeated in some form for the next 12 weeks. I also put the first 6 miles on a new pair of Asics Kayano 16s, so far so good, I'll be reviewing them in the future; probably at the 100 mile mark.

You’ll see below that I was averaging around 1:50…I’ve got some work to do I need to get it down to 1:25!

Afterwards I headed off my Chiropractor afterwards who spent some serious time working on my shoulders which were as locked up as Harry Houdini; must have been carrying all those gels and blocks around at the weekend! Talking of which I am putting together a little Holiday contest to share the wealth...watch this space!

  3. Dang Stuart, you could have started out a bit easier than that! A nice little jog, or jaunt, or ramble perhaps? Straight into intervals? Sheesh!

  4. Nice to have you back running. But intervals? Seriously! I had a pair of Kayanos way back. I found them to be too cushioned. Oh and my 'tub' of sports nutrition could fit into a small ziplock. You my friend need help.

  5. Stuart, INTERVALS! At first I thought you need help when I saw the 'tub' of gels. Then when I read you were doing intervals for your first run back?? Glad to see you're out there.

  6. Great intervals for a frist go after such a break. You will be down to target time sooner rather than later. Nice one.

  9. So true what you say..just how come we have to repeat step 1 so often; it sucks.

    Wish you a successful training.

  10. Glad you're running again!!

I've done the FIRST program for 10k and marathon. I love the track-work.

I do best with it when I'm training for a triathlon as well because then I'm more motivated to do the cross training. (Otherwise I add recovery runs into the schedule.)

  11. I LOVE intervals, but they are a beast and kick your butt every time! Nice job on getting back to running. Can't wait to hear your review on the 16s!

  12. Glad to hear that you're making your way back.

It's humbling (to say the least) to start at the beginning. I speak from experience.

It is such a gift to be able to run. I think that the 'setbacks' help us to remember that.

    Great job Stuart!
