Mine has been like this since I took a flight to Oregon. Even if I use the altimeter calibration with saved locations it still messed up on the next turn-on. It's gotten so bad that even Garmin Connect won't correct when elevation correction is turned on..

Altimeter has gone a bit crazy! I know I bitched about it being hilly where I live but it’s really not that bad!
